Halong Bay Weather & Seasons: Month by Month Guide

Planning a trip to Halong Bay? Our month-by-month weather guide covers temperatures, rainfall, and the best time to visit for perfect cruising.

Halong Bay is located in Northern Vietnam, which means it experiences four distinct seasons. Unlike the tropical south, the weather here can vary from misty, cold winters to hot, humid summers. Choosing the right month can drastically change your experience—from swimming in crystal waters to watching the limestone karsts emerge from a mysterious fog.

Climate Overview

Generally, the best time to visit Halong Bay is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is mild, the sky is clear, and the water is perfect for activities.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January & February: The Misty Winter

Expect cool temperatures and “mystical” fog. It’s often too cold for swimming, but the foggy scenery is incredible for photography. Note: Lunar New Year (Tet) usually falls in this period, so check for holiday availability.

March & April: The Perfect Balance

Transition months with warm sun and low humidity. This is arguably the best time for kayaking and outdoor exploring.

May to August: Blue Skies & Summer Heat

Perfect for swimming and water sports. The bay is at its bluest, but it’s also the hottest time of year. Be prepared for high humidity.

September to October: The Second Peak

After the summer heat fades, the air becomes crisp and the water remains warm. A favorite for international travelers.

November & December: Dry and Cool

Very little rain and pleasant weather. December is very popular for Christmas and New Year cruises.

Storm Season & Cancellations

Storms and typhoons usually occur between July and September. While rare, they can cause cruise cancellations for safety reasons.

What happens if my cruise is cancelled?

If the Management Board of Halong Bay refuses departure due to weather, you will usually be offered an alternative date or a full/partial refund depending on the cruise policy. Always book with a reputable agency like VN to You Tour to ensure support during weather disruptions.
